Abstract
The odontogenic keratocyst(OKC) is clinically characterized by its high recurrence rate, multiplicity and association with basal cell nevus syndrome(BCNS). The aim of this study is to understand the pathogenesis that OKC has distinct clinical
behavior.
The proliferating activity is investigated according to solitary, multiple and BCNS associated types. Fifty five cases of OKC obtained from 53 patients are reviewed clinically and radiologically PC 10(Dako) is applied to analyze the proliferating
activity. Also, we observe the continuity of basement membrane y demonstration of collagen type IV. As results, proliferating activity of OCK is significantly higher than that of dentigerous cyst, supporting clinical aggressiveness of OKC. The
recurrent
cases and/or syndrome associated cases show noticeablely high proliferating activity. The continuity of collagen type IV is maintained in all cystic epithelia including daughter cysts and epithelial budding.
In conclusion, we find that OKC is significantly different from dentigerous cyst in term of proliferating activity, and that PCNA can be a useful tool to perdict the recurrent or BCNS associated types.
